On September 11, 2001, Port Authority Police Lt. David Lim was in the basement of the South Tower with his K-9 partner, Sirius, a dog trained to detect explosives. When Lim felt the building shake, he left Sirius in his kennel while he went to investigate. Lim was aiding in the evacuation of the North Tower when the building collapsed. He survived inside an air pocket within a stairwell. Sirius died in the South Tower collapse.
