After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, dogs and their handlers from across the United States served at the Pentagon, World Trade Center site, and family assistance centers. Hundreds of K-9 teams searched the wreckage for survivors and victims, and dogs comforted family members and responders. Photographers documented the teams navigating the hazardous crash sites and recorded quiet moments between the dogs and handlers. When images of the dogs appeared around the world, they brightened 9/11's dark aftermath.
Through images as well as stories from people who worked with the dogs, this book pays tribute to the four-legged responders that were ready when the country needed them.
