Dating to 1982, the original Big Apple composition by George Wolffe features the familiar fruit referencing New York City's nickname peeled back to reveal a collage of black and white drawings of iconic local landmarks. In the wake of the 2001 terror attacks, he revised the design as "Proudly We Stand", adding a colorful American Flag as background and restoring the Twin Towers to the City's skyline. The artist refers to this modification as his "tribute" to all the wounded and loved ones lost on 9/11. The updated design found its way onto posters and t-shirts sold widely around the New York metropolitan region. Both the first and second commemorative versions of Wolffe's artwork are in the collection of the 9/11 Memorial Museum.
